The Copeland/Huckabee Love Affair

01/27/2008

Huckabee & Copeland

Billionaire evangelist oilman cattle rancher Kenneth Copeland, who sits so high atop the “prosperity gospel” pyramid that he has hundreds of “franchise” churches whose pastors send money back up the pipeline, spent much of his annual ministers conference last week talking about how he stonewalled the Senate Finance Committee, then boasted about having Mike Huckabee on his team.

“Kenneth Copeland, I will stand with you!” Huckabee yelled over the phone, according to Copeland. “You’re trying to get prosperity to the people, and they’re [the Senate] trying to take it away from ‘em. I will stand with you anytime, anywhere, on any issue!”

You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialise correctly.

You can watch the whole speech here, but basically Copeland is saying that he offered to hide his close relationship with Huckabee—the ex-governor had recently recorded a full week of televised “Bible studies” with Copeland, who constantly huckstered Huckabee’s ten-year-old book—but Huckabee said he would gladly oppose the Senate’s investigation of Copeland and others because “they only have an 11 percent approval rating.”

Every year Copeland invites about 1,000 fellow prosperity-gospel ministers to his church/broadcasting facility/ranch/natural gas field/airstrip in Newark, Texas, a few miles north of Fort Worth, for a three-day conference. This year he shut down the conference after two of the days and convened some kind of separate session with the same ministers that would protect his 501(3)(c) tax exemption while he raised campaign funds for Huckabee. Reports on Thursday morning were that he’d come up with $111,000 in immediate cash, plus an additional million bucks in pledges, which would work out to around $1,000 per pastor. (These sorts of fundraising efforts with the Copeland “family” are fairly common. About 30 pastors raised $2.1 million for Copeland’s 70th birthday celebration a year ago.)

The Door left messages for Huckabee and his press secretary over the weekend, but they were not returned.

Copeland spent much of the three-day ministers conference reassuring his fellow pastors that all their ministries were safe from the prying eyes of the Congress. He repeatedly made a distinction between the Congress and the Internal Revenue Service, saying that he recognized the executive branch but not the legislative when it came to oversight. He was especially upset by a request that he reveal the donors to a “special offering” made to himself and his wife for the 40th anniversary of their ministry and said that he’d “promised to God” never to give any information to anyone about that, even if it means prison or death. He frequently mentioned receiving direct instructions from “the Lord,” including instructions to put Mike Huckabee on his television show, Believer’s Voice of Victory.

You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialise correctly.

During his six programs with Huckabee, airing in November, the two men reminisced about their friendship and Huckabee’s political career in Arkansas, with occasional excursions into scripture. Neither of them distinguished themselves as Biblical scholars, but Huckabee’s comments were especially lame as he seemed to be sucking up to “Brother Kenneth” in discussing passages like James 1:3: “It is the trying of your faith that works patience.”

Huckabee’s read on that passage was that he used to think “trying” meant a trial of faith. (This is what 99 percent of commentators for the past 2000 years have also believed it meant.) But then, the more he thought about it, the more he thought the key word was “try.” It meant to “keep trying,” and every time you fail, to try again. “I tried tithing and it didn’t work. Well, try it again. I tried it three or four times. Well, try it again.” Huckabee’s view: it doesn’t mean to be patient when God sends trials, it means to assert yourself—in other words, the opposite of its apparent meaning. Since the Greek word for “try” as in “trial” and the Greek word for “try” as in “attempt” are two different words, Huckabee’s exegesis of this particular scripture is not only demonstrably wrong as a matter of fact, but he seems to be insisting on it as a way to support Copeland’s emphasis on tithing, which is the source of his fortune.

There are other examples scattered through the week, including some statements by Huckabee that, no matter what office he holds, “my only client is Jesus.”

Other highlights from the minister’s conference:

• Copeland seems puzzled by the fact that Senator Charles Grassley, who is spearheading the Senate investigation, was also the author of the Church Protection Act.

• Copeland talks about his natural gas company and says that the Senate’s suspicions about the source of that wealth are “bull.”

• Copeland’s characterization of his answer to Senator Grassley: “We gave them a several page lesson on ‘No’. . . . We gave them the address of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C.”

• Copeland assures everyone that he’s personally been a billionaire “a long time” and that his ministry has taken in $1.3 billion over 41 years. “I’m the seed of Abraham. The seed of Abraham are known for being rich. I’m a Jew. I’m a rich Jew backed by a richer Jew. God loves me just as much as he loves Jesus.”

Editor's note: Confronted about the Copeland statements on "Meet the Press," Huckabee did not deny that he said what Copeland said he said.

Maybe churches should print a message in every church bulletin discouraging their members from sending any money to any TV preacher.

And here is how it all started.

Even so Lord come( as in the days of (who) so shall it be in the last days. Remember no one sets in authority over another without God allowing it. There is a reason and season for everything just think of the closeness of his 2nd coming. When you see these things that all of you have talked about look for the Lord WHO is to come soon. There will be a rise of preachers out of nothing to preach the full gospel Matt: 3:16 the most important VERSE in the bible. SILVER AND GOLD I HAVE NOT BUT WHAT I HAVE I GIVE FREELY THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST. ALL OF THIS HAS TO COME TO PASS, TO MAKE WAY FOR THE LORD JESUS CHRIST. GOD BE WITH YOU ALL, AND MAY YOU FIND ONE OF THE FAVORITE TERMS USED BY JESUS (PEACE BE UNTO YOU)

Thank God for annointing men like Kenneth Copeland and Kenneth Hagin to teach the saints about what belongs to them. These brothers have revelation on God's word.No wonder they live healthy and wealthy lives!!!

Anonymous | 03:31 pm on 2/05/2008

Hagin had heart problems for most of his life. When these people get sick and they do,they keep it as quiet as possible. Then they consult the finest doctors money can buy! Dodie Osteen,Betty Price,Peggy Capps, and Jan Crouch didn't "confess" their illnesses away. They were treated medically and by the sovereign mercy of God they live today! R.W. Schambach had heart by pass surgery, but yet he tells TBN viewers "they don't need doctors they just need God." All of them are charlatans!

This stuff never ceases to both amaze and amuse. I left the WOF movement over ten years ago and I'm glad that I did. Personally I don't think that Grassley's investigation will yield anything. This doesn't mean that there aren't questionable goings on behind the closed doors of these organisations, but perhaps the good senator is doing this for his own sake and choosing a soft target. Lord knows.

All I ask is that before you pass judgement on the Copelands, take the time to visit their website www.kcm.org and look at all the good they do for the world. If they are millionare fakes, why would they go through all this trouble to help people. Read the bible and compare it to what they say. The truth will come out, but before anyone wants to run out of Texas, give them a chance to explain their side of the story. There are fakes in the world, but I believe the Copelands are doing a great things and speak the truth; God's truth.

At one time I actually thought I'd vote for Huckabee, but not now. K. Copeland and his kind are the biggest detriment for Christ and his church. They twist scripture into a self-fulfulling money-making machine. I live very close to his "so-called" Church. All you have to do is read the sign to the entrance of the compound. It says (in big letters):
Kenneth Copeland Ministries

Where is HIS name?

2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Anonymous | 06:25 am on 2/03/2008

Good post smoke! Sadly Kenny Copeland isn't the only heretic running around. Fred Price,Jesse DuPlantis,Jerry Savelle, and even that "mand of Gawd!" Creflo "Cashflow" Dollar are still spewing their doctrinal poison! Copeland just happens to be the big fish in the "WOF" pond! 2 Timothy 4:3 is indeed a very relevant verse in this day and age. Great post! P.S. it must be noisy where you live when Kenny cranks up the old Citation X huh?

BoycottTBN | 02:37 pm on 2/04/2008

Which one? Doesn't he have a whole fleet fo' the Lawd??? What a crock!! All so-called ministries must do some kind of charity work or the would be able to claim the tax exempt status. Just think how many more starving people could be fed if these wolves in sheep's clothing didn't steal the money for their own personal gain.

Not Blaming | 01:21 pm on 2/07/2008

What a foolish thing to blame/punish Huckabee for the teachings of someone who simply supports him. For ANY and EVERY given canidate, there are people of ALL faiths, denominations, beliefs (and lack thereof) who support them. No canidate should be blamed for the beliefs of those who choose to support him (or her).

HUCKABEE,,,, HAS PROVEN WHAT TYPE OF MAN HE IS BY SUPPORTING LIARS, THIEVES, PERVERTS AND LAW BREAKERS.
YES, ALL OF THESE MEN BREAK THE LAW BY ENDOSING HUCKABEE. THEY BREAK THE LAW BY NOT REVEALING A SIMPLE TAX REQUEST. BY THE WAY,, THESE PIMPS HAVE FORFEITED THE AMMENDMENT THAT GIVE THEM SEPARATION FROM CHURCH AND STATE WHEN THEY TURN THIER CHURCHES OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT UNDER THE 501C3. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT INCLUDING HUCKABEE. THESE CHURCHES NOW BELONG TO THE GOVERNMENT. BECAUSE OF THEIR GREED THEY DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT UNDER THE LAW OF 508 THEY ALREADY HAD TAX EXEMPT, BUT GREED CAUSED THEM TO WANT TO BE TOTALLY TAX FREE OF HOMES, CARS, JETS, TRIPS ETC. SO THEY INCORPORATED WITH THE STATE UNDER 501C3. NOW IF HUCKABEE IS OPENLY HANGING OUT WITH THESE GUYS,, ALL ON TV FOR A WHOLE WEEK,, THIS MAKES ME THINK THAT THESE PIMPS ARE BUYING HIM TO GET THEM OUT OF HOT WATER. I'M JUST SAYING.
DO A WEB STUDY ON THE 501C3 AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT THE PEOPLE HERE ARE SAYING.

BoycottTBN | 09:10 pm on 2/08/2008

To Not Blaming,
Have another sip of Kool Aid buddy, then take a listen. Bush did this same thing. He got in bed...so to speak...with the televangelists and it got him elected. Huckabee is simply trying to do the same thing, and it's obvious that he's desperate.

By saying "I'm with you Kenneth, you're trying to get money to the people and the 11% approval rating senate is trying to take it away." (paraphrased)......sounds to me like he's turning against his own kind and jumping in bed with Copeland!!

Copeland is raising money for the cash-strapped Huckabee and he's broke so......2+2.

Michael the Archange; | 01:32 am on 2/03/2008

It amazes me that ministers like Kenneth Copeland rail against the very government that has given them the many tax exemptions that they enjoy the privilege of having. His arrogance and his contempt for the governing bodies that rule our country is not in the mold of the teachings of Jesus. Two scriptures come to mind that warns those who rebel against the authority that operates over them and the punishment for such arrogance and contempt.
1 Peter 2:11-14 clearly states to Christians the following:

11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

And 1 Samuel 15:23 is the scripture that the prophet told the King of Israel Saul when God removed him from being position of King:

15 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

That prison door Kenneth Copeland claims he doesn't fear may well be the hand of God telling him he needs to remember who butters his bread.

God is my all.
Kenneth is a great man, a man of his word, He lives what he speaks, That is more than alot of us can say.
Just because he wont show his "tax papers" who cares?
Thats all Gods deal.
Do none of you have faith?

It's true.

Stephen | 12:21 pm on 2/04/2008

Weak article. Not sure what the point is or what Huckabee's crime was. I'm still voting for him; not because of his biblical exegesis (though it far surpasses that of, say, Mitt "Planet Kolob" Romney), but because of his pro-American positions on the issues of our day.

Robert Winkler Burke | 08:01 pm on 2/04/2008

Hey everybody, what about RICO lawsuits? Many a greedy televangelist appears to have grossly channeled TV donations into their mega lifestyles for the rich and famous. For example, the KCM jet was used, according to the gospel of John Copeland, ten percent for family use in 2007. To the $17.5 million donors, isn't this fraud? (Even though KCM might have been compensated for the personal trips, the donors who donated for the "ministry" plane were not.) If a ministry can be nabbed by just one additional thing beyond such fraud, then it's RICO. And a Fed lawsuit would take all the income away from an org so convicted. Or a civil RICO lawsuit gets treble damages. A KCM RICO class action suit would possibly yield $52.6 million. How's that for seed harvest?

I hope Copeland and KCM ministries kick Grassley's glutes. Grassley gave a big whopping 2000 to charities last year with a personal net worth of over 2 million. Grassley stated "I am a Christian and I am a tither...." Just do the math and you will see that he is a thief and a liar.

That doesn't mean that he's a thief and a liar....tithing means different things to different people. Sometimes it means money, sometimes it means giving your time, food, donations, etc.

You just made Grassley look better and yourself look like a KoolAid drinking fool.....you're in bed with the devil!

Kristy Beach | 12:03 pm on 2/13/2008

I’ve been there, that’s why I am here.
Exactly who does have a right to question Copeland about where the money goes? Copeland put on a exhalent performance at his latest ministers conference, visible at http://www.wittenburgdoor.com/copelandclips , in which has now gotten the attention of people all across the USA, and abroad. If I didn’t personally know better, one would actually think he cares about the protection of all his followers (partners),that pour money into his ministry. Requesting a summery of my mothers (Bonnie Parker) contributions, a long time partner of KCM, we like Grassley got little or no response. (Request viewable at http://sis359.blogspot.com/ ). If their partners aren’t entitled to this privileged information, even though they are funding this lavish lifestyle KCM has grown very accustom to, nor is the Senate entitled either, then who is? The IRS perhaps? Are the teachings of the Prosperity Gospel message being misconstrued? Do we, any of us, have a valid argument, or the right to ask for these records ? I believe with all my heart, we should let the ones affected most by this money making scam have a say in determining the answer to those questions..
“ I had a home“, “I had a life“, “I had faith“, “I had a family“, “I lost a loved one“, “I have no clue what the truth is anymore!” “I will never trust any form of religion.” these are merely a handful of endless testimonies coming to light nationwide. Ranging from all walks of life, their heartbreaking testimonies can be found throughout the web, yet inconceivably, victims are being labeled as fools, ignorant, and basically downright blind for not seeing the truth behind the Prosperity Gospels falsehoods. ” Being only human, our quest for health and wealth, regrettably does lead some in the wrong direction. Promises and guaranties, made by the Prosperity Gospel ministers, give people that have not obtained these blessings on their own, a second chance at achieving their goals in life. An important discovery I made while reviewing testimonies, revealed the fact numerous victims had very little knowledge of the Prosperity Gospels dark side. These unfortunate victims, appear to be equipped with only a small portion of the web of deceit these ministers weave . Picture yourself being raised in a small country town, with a population of only a few hundred, the closest city, only a population of only a few thousand. Computers, internet, cable, satellite TV, and other high tech gadgets are not needed or desired. You are living a simple , solemn life you wouldn’t trade for any amount of cash. After your working day is done, you gladly remove your shoes, kick back in your easy chair, and relax without a care in the world for a while. After flipping on the TV to view the local evening news broadcast, you are reminded to give thanks that you don’t have the worries that accompany life outside the safe haven of your home, and your community. Religion is your safeguard, your faith is strong, and you have no doubts about the truth behind your sacred beliefs. This was my life, before KCM.
Prosperity Gospel ministers enter the homes of many victims though a thirty minute Sunday morning worship service on a local broadcast station. Growing up in Jigger La., truly located in the middle of nowhere, I can testify to the fact that we only received on a clear day about three or four channels at most. Warnings of dangers associated with Prosperity Gospel ministries, made by critics, ministers, and victims go unheard, therefore tragically for many, when the realization of this scam is discovered it is already to late. Family’s have lost their homes, lifesavings, and some even their lives due to the Prosperity Gospels misleading doctrines. Unfortunately my mother was not one of the lucky ones, her confidence, and faith in this false Gospel, ultimately cost her, her life. After more than a decade of programming her mind to believe and think the Prosperity Gospel way of life, she lost her battle with cancer. By refusing medical attention, she sealed her fate, but the programming she had acquired from Kenneth and Gloria Copeland proved strong all the way to her last breath. A diary she left behind revealed the horrific tale of her life from 1992-2002, the top of each page titled with Kenneth Copeland, Gloria Copeland, or BVOV. Some mistakes in life we can not undo, and good intentions don’t always go as planed, these victims are simply following misleading promises of health and wealth. The use of miraculous healing confessions, and newly found wealth testimonies, are their sales pitch, sadly my mom among many other are proof that their sale pitch works. The possibility these Mega churches were misusing finances for personal luxuries is what brought this scam to the publics attention, not the loss of life, the financially bankrupt, and numerous homeless victims they have been left in the wake of this devastating hoax. So, do we continue blaming the victims, or do we stand up beside them, learn from there mistakes, and put an end to these senseless tragedies? Even I being a victims daughter have many lingering questions, such as follows, “How is it that some see the truth, and others do not?” ” What leads these victim to believe the unbelievable?” “ Are some more vulnerable to these sort of money making scams than others When all is said and done, perhaps they will be tagged, not as the Prosperity Gospel, but the false gospel. One Quote from Copelands mouth should erases any doubts of KCM innocence,
“It’s not yours, it’s God’s and you’re not going to get it and that’s something I’ll go to prison over. So, just get over it!”

My heart, is breaking for you, your family and your poor belated loved one. I am soooooooooooo,,, very sorry to hear all of this. I wish there was something that i could do. I do post on various web sites and warn people of this false gospel movement and my family and I do pray. But this post has made me see that we need to pray MORE, for God to open the eyes of the blind.

There will be many that will read this post and say,,, ''HER FAITH WAS NOT STRONG ENOUGH''. They will say such foolishness, because they have been brain-washed into believing that we can FORCE GOD to obey us and give us what ever we want. Jesus said that our prayers should be ''NOT MY WILL BUT YOUR WILL BE DONE''. These fake preachers will soon feel the wrath of God himself. that is my prayer.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING,,,,MAY THIS POST SAVE SOME OTHER BLIND PERSON. MAY GOD GIVE YOU THE STRENGTH TO CONTINUE TO POST THIS EVERY WHERE ON THE INTERNET,, I WILL FORWARD THIS STORY.

"Would His Wife Wear Furs and Diamonds, Would His Dressing Room Have a Star?"

Anyone who really thinks that Copeland and His Ilk are preaching the gospel is probably wrong about 99% of other things as well.

It bothers me that there are "ministers" who are bilking little old ladies out of money.

What bothers me more is that there are actually people walking around loose out there who actually believe them!

Now THAT is really scary!

To ALL those who call themselves Christian today is this a fair question with Copeland in the news BIG TIME?
Ask on Yahoo Answers 2/08. (made needed changes) Copeland will not show his church money records as ask by law.
"They said: Caesar's." (image on tax coin in Jesus day) Then he (Jesus) said to them: "Pay back, therefore, Caesar's things to Caesar, but God's things to God." (Matt. 22:21) Simply put give taxes to Caesar (government) and worship only to God (of Bible) and do not mix the two up. Do not worship a government and God does not need our taxes. He God owns all things but for now allows the Dveil to rule over human governments. (Key fact-Matt. 4:8-10)

"It is regrettable that someone so influential within contemporary Christianity continues to preach a message that overturns virtually every major biblical teaching. To date, Copeland refuses to discuss with his critics the issues raised in this article. We only hope that he will soon realize the dangerous road he is traveling." Looks like he does not obey government or God! Kind of a dangerous influential man, RIGHT?

Who made a business out of healing, God's Son Jesus or today's clergy? Would Jesus say the below to clergy today? "Stop making the house of my Father a house of merchandise!" (John 2:16) Same word merchandise in King James Bible too! Another version does say business. Look around that Scripture and see why Jesus said that. (Money-4-lights-etc.-not-clergy,-let-them-make-it-like-faithful-of-old-did-Paul-etc. Jesus said "my Father"! Who is he? Jesus said hallow the Father's name, where? (here Matt.6:9)

King Jame Bible, "That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth." (Psalm 83:18) That is the name of the Father and God of Jesus, who wants his name hallowed (Matt. 6:9) and known to all men.(like said above) "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." (Ex. 20:3) In Exodus 20:7 it says not to use that hallowed name in vain, it did not say, not to use it. Jehovah used the faithful to put in his word the Bible near 7000 times his name, kind of sounds like he (wanted it there, big time!) Who did he give the right to take is name out against his copyright law at Revelation 22:18,19 that says not to add or take anything out? Look and see what will happen to those who do one or both of those things! Jehovah's Witnesses do not mix in government/war and have no paid clergy. We do not hate the clergy or government leaders but love Jehovah and his Son Jesus who will soon be King of ALL the earth and fix ALL things no candidate anywhere on earth can fix. You can try! But will not be able no matter how big the candidate's talk! FACT!

Copeland's head is too large for his body. Am I the only person who's ever noticed that? I'd like to fight him in the Octagon after I dispatch Hinn, Haggard and Hagee. His head's such an easy target that I'd neck-crank him and say "Confess that one away, Kenneth!"

what a hell is wrong with you people, everyone has a right to give what ever money he wants to any ministry...

Anonymous | 04:11 pm on 2/21/2008

we should not desire money...then we should all be poor to be good cristians...sorry but i like to have a nice house for me and my family...i would like to have a massion if i could...why not..are not the actors in hollywood have a lot of money and they can get anything they want...are all actors going to hell because they have money...is bill gates wrong for having dinero...what a bunch of crap..this land is prosperous because God bless this nation...but with the attitude of so many people soon this country is going to disappear...People should be happy with what we have and stop crying about ministers that like to be prosperous. A laborer is worthy ot its wages.

Have another sip of the Jim Jones KoolAid ......as for actors in Hollywood, they do not do what they do "in the name of God" telling you that God will return it to you 30/60/100 fold, if you buy tickets to see them! Copeland and his ilk are nothing but con artists and wolves in sheep's clothing RAPING the flock.

Everyone has the right to be rich if they come by it honestly. You have really bought into the lie, and you should be ashamed of yourself!!

"A laborer is worthy ot its wages." Yes, if he comes by it honestly. People are not going to doctors, not paying their bills, giving medicine money to these creeps and dying because of it.

Go Senator Grassley!!

This is my only comment , First I have no axe to grind nor do I want to . Do I agree with everything many of these men all preachers , preach , No ! , why because thats the whole point they are just men subject to failure ! All of us are and always will be , None can ever get it totaly right .
So now this is my word to all of you who are casting the first stone . If you have no sin in your life go for it and the second statement is this , get the plank out of your eye first , then go and help your brother get the twig out of his eye.

Doesn't the Word of God say all have falling short ! Well thats me and you and whom ever gets up each and every day !

There is nothing wrong with having nice things or even being rich,,, but come on,,,now. Should we lie and steal from the poor and weak to obtain these things? Oh,, and don't forget lying of God to get rich. If this is ok with some people,, then ,,, we all know who your father is. (satan)

Proverbs 28:6
Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse.

Proverbs 28:20
A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

1 Timothy 6:9
People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.

I'm new to this blog and to the Wittenburg door, but I've read the comments on this article and one thing I have noticed by its lack is John the Elder's comments (1 John 3:17-18) "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth" and in 3:7-8, "Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. he who does what is right is righteous, just as he (God) is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning." As a seminary prof of mine once said, "Be sure your sin will find you out." 99% of us who live in North America are blessed when it comes to material possessions. I say this in comparison to the people on our streets who have no home, who freeze to death when it gets to -40 and they have no shelter. In comparison to millions of children in Africa who are AIDS orphans or who are going blind because of Trachoma. What are we doing to help bring Jesus' love to them? If we amass wealth, at least let it be invested for the purpose of alleviating suffering in the rest of the world. And don't be fooled into thinking that wealth is always the direct blessing of the Almighty. Sometimes it is a test to see what we will do with that wealth. God gave great wealth to Solomon and he became desolate and apostate because of it and the kingdom of Israel was split by his son Rehoboam.
Tithing is an Old Testament (Jewish Scripture) practice that reminded us that everything we had is from God to begin with and we are stewards of that wealth for Him. Jesus calls us to a higher standard. If we hate our brother we are murderers in our hearts. If we look lustfully at another human being we are already committing adultery in our hearts. Likewise, we are to set apart in our hearts an amount to give to the Lord. Ten percent is an arbitrary number, but I have personally known people who have deliberately lived on only 10 percent of their income and given the rest away. What about George Mueller? He gave away over a million dollars in his lifetime (in the 1800's no less) and died with less than 10 dollars to his name, but he was mightily used by God, starting many orphanages in Bristol, England.
Our deeds expose what is in our hearts. If we truly love God, then we will love our brother and sister humans who are made in the image of God.

For it is by the love we have for one another that the world will know we are Christ's disciples (John 13:35)
