I know I'm gonna get flamed by some fundys here but I have always had Paul pictured as one of those unmarried guys so committed to the cause that they look down on the guys who are "distracted" by a family. Paul was not unknown to give an opinion from time to time in his letters and I believe that this is one of those places where he gave an opinion as opposed to an absolute.
This is after all the same guy who said all things were permissible but not all things were beneficial. Perhaps he was talking to a guy with 10 kids and an angry, exhausted wife. "Sure I'd love to come down and volunteer to help at temple ,Paul, but two of the little ones are sick and I have to take little timmy to lute lessons and steven has gladiator class on friday...
